How long is the training period?

The training period can last up to 14 shifts however it will be based on how quickly you learn the positions and responsibilities of the job. If you have barista experience, you could potentially complete the training period sooner.

Is the training period tipped or untipped?

During the training period, baristas are untipped and compensated at the city minimum wage

What will my pay be after the training period?

Accepted Answer

All baristas are paid at the city minimum tipped wage plus tips. Tips are pooled weekly and are distributed evenly based on hours worked. This is done for each location independently. They tend to average $10/hr. All tips are included on your check, and you will be paid every Friday. The 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day are all paid at 1.5x the normal pay rate.

How long on avg. are shifts?

On average shifts are about 6 hours. If there are any exceptions, managers will communicate with baristas prior to scheduling. There are typically three people scheduled a day: an opener (6am-12pm), a mid (7/8am-1/2pm), and a closer (11am/12pm-6:15pm).

How do breaks work?

We follow all Federal, State, and Local labor laws. Typically baristas are allotted an optional ten-minute break during their shift and it is up to their best judgement when to take it. Homebase will prompt you at the end of your shift for your break time.

How do I set my availability?

Accepted Answer

Availability can be set in the scheduling app, under 'Requests' and 'My Availability'. After you request a new availability, it will need to be approved by your manager so it can reflect on upcoming schedules. Availability is set once you are hired on and not changed often, one example would be if you have a second job and can't work Tuesdays.

How do I request off?

Requesting days off can also be done in the Homebase app under 'Requests' and 'Time Off'. When requesting off be sure to include if it will be unpaid or paid time off. If the request off is made prior to the scheduling posting your manager will to their best to accommodate. If the request is made after the schedule is posted it is up to you to trade or get the shift covered. If you request paid time off, that also needs to be requested and approved separately in the 'Gusto' interface. This is used for one time schedule changes, examples would be birthdays, vacations, or other non-reoccurring requests.

How do I trade shifts?

Trading shifts can be done in the Homebase app under 'Requests' and 'Trade'. Trades must be accepted by both baristas and the manager.

What do I do if I need a shift covered?

Accepted Answer

If you need a shift covered, let your manager know ASAP to keep them in the loop. However, it is your responsibility to get shift coverage. Shifts can be traded or covered, and baristas from all store locations can help! Be sure to follow up by requesting a 'cover' in Homebase with the barista who is covering the shift, so it will reflect on the schedule.

What is the 90-day probationary period?

The 90-day probationary period is the time a new barista works before they can qualify for benefits and/or full-time with Mainspring.

They can change at anytime however the most current benefits can include the following:
30% off at any Mainspring location (Room for Milly, Queens Eleven, Blue Sparrow Coffee) must be in a reusable cup if at BSC
Free coffee while on shift but must be in a reusable cup, one free to go drink after your shift but also must be in a reusable cup.

What is the dress code?

Blue Sparrow Coffee takes pride in giving our employees the freedom to express themselves and their style/personality, so we do not currently have a dress code. All we ask is that clothing does not have vulgar or offensive content, you wear closed toed shoes to comply with the health department, and practice good hygiene!

What is parking like while working shifts?

Blake Street: Free street parking is available all around the neighborhood! Don’t forget to get there a bit early for your shift to find parking when applicable.

Platte Street: We currently have a few reserved tandem parking spots we can use as a team located on the lower third level. You will get an email from service@parkchrip.com with a QR code to get in and out of the garage. This is a huge perk that we are lucky to have but is not always guaranteed in the future.

Sherman Street: Free 2 hour street parking, metered street parking, and paid parking lot's are available. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday has free parking in our private lot.

Don’t forget to get there a bit early for your shift to find parking when applicable.
